Understanding SIBO: Types, Causes, and Associated Conditions

Introduction

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, commonly known as SIBO, is a condition that affects many people worldwide, often causing significant digestive distress and a variety of other health issues. In this post, we’ll delve into the intricacies of SIBO, explore the different types, and discuss some associated conditions that could arise from its presence. This information should not replace medical advice and is intended for educational purposes; always consult your doctor for personal health concerns.

 What is SIBO?

SIBO occurs when bacteria that normally inhabit other parts of the digestive tract begin to overgrow in the small intestine, leading to a range of digestive issues. There are three main types of SIBO:

1. Hydrogen SIBO: The bacteria produce hydrogen, leading to diarrhea.

2. Methane SIBO (or Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth, IMO): In this type, archaea - micro-organisms different from bacteria - produce methane from hydrogen, resulting in constipation.

3. Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO (or Intestinal Sulfide Overgrowth, ISO): Additional bacteria convert hydrogen into hydrogen sulfide, causing explosive diarrhea and potential leaky gut conditions.

It's possible to experience a combination of these types, known as mixed or alternating SIBO, where symptoms switch between diarrhea and constipation.

Having SIBO means the bacteria consume the nutrients meant for our body and the beneficial bacteria in our microbiome, leading to nutrient deficiency and microbiome imbalances. Like many people, I have faced mixed SIBO for several years, experiencing both diarrhea and constipation as symptoms.

 The Migratory Motor Complex Connection

SIBO is often linked to the malfunctioning of the migratory motor complex (MMC), which functions like a “cleaning wave” to move food residues and bacteria from the small intestine to the large intestine. If the MMC is slowed down, it can result in fermentation and bacterial overgrowth. Various factors can slow down the MMC, consequently causing SIBO.

Can SIBO Also Trigger Other Conditions?

Beyond its immediate symptoms, SIBO may trigger several secondary conditions, such as:

- Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

- Histamine Intolerance

- Brain Fog: Difficulty concentrating may accompany SIBO.

- Anxiety and Depression: Often these symptoms resolve with treatment focused on digestive health, such as activated charcoal.

- Fibromyalgia: SIBO can potentially contribute to or exacerbate fibromyalgia.

- Interstitial Cystitis and Skin Issues like Rosacea: These are believed to be connected to histamine from MCAS and histamine intolerance. Treating SIBO often helps reduce these symptoms.

Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive; SIBO could potentially cause more conditions than listed here.
